Mercury Energy is the retailer for MRP. MRP generates some electricity from gas and has no policy to only generate electricity from renewable sources in the future. Thanks to NZ-wide protest, MRP dropped their plans to run Marsden B power station on coal.
Meridian
Meridian Energy is ranked as the cleanest energy company in terms of climate change. Meridian currently uses only renewable sources to generate electricity and is the only company committed to using only renewable sources in the future.
Bay of Plenty Electricity
Over 50% of BOP's current capacity is gas. Gas, while not as polluting as coal and oil, emits carbon dioxide - the main greenhouse gas that causes climate change. BOP has no stated policy to only generate electricity from renewable sources in the future.
TrustPower
TrustPower is ranked as the second cleanest energy choice because it currently generates electricity using 100% renewable sources, but it hasn’t ruled out using fossil fuels in the future.
Empower
Empower is a retailer for Contact. Over 50% of Contact's installed generation capacity is gas. Gas is not as polluting as coal, but still emits carbon-polluting CO2. Contact is planning to invest only in renewable sources until '08 but still has gas plans

Energy Online is a retailer for Genesis Energy which owns New Zealand's main coal fired power station at Huntly – the biggest single point source of CO2 pollution in the country. About 75% of their installed capacity uses climate polluting fossil fuels.
