Mercury Energy
Mercury Energy allow customers to feed their excess electricity back into the local lines network, but only customers connected to Vector power lines (Auckland region). A Mercury Energy-specific meter reading box needs to be installed. This locks the consumer into arrangements with Mercury Energy until it is replaced. The fine details of the arrangements are negotiated with Mercury Energy on a case by case basis.
Contact Energy
Contact Energy is the only electricity company that enables their customers who are generating their own electricity on site to sell surplus power back to Contact Energy at the full retail rate. However Contact Energy only offers arrangement to members of the New Zealand Photovoltaic Association so you would need to join that association first.
TrustPower
TrustPower has a system whereby they pay for excess electricity generation which a customer generates at their premises and sends into the network. Customers are entitled to a price of 5.00 cents per kWh for the electricity that they export into the network. - approximately 1/3 of the retail price.
Genesis
Genesis Energy has a programme called HomeGen which is designed for distributed or embedded generation facilities with less than 10kW capacity. Genesis will purchase surplus electricity from HomeGen customers. The rates are based on Genesis Energy's estimated value of surplus electricity on the wholesale market, taking expected variations into account. This will usually mean you will be paid less than the retail price.
Meridian
Meridian does not offer any system to connect excess small scale customer electricity generation back into the local lines network.
King Country Energy
King Country Energy have a process whereby any person who wishes to install their own generation can offset generation and demand. No information is available on price.
Bay of Plenty Electricity
Bay of Plenty Electricity do not offer any system to connect excess small scale customer electricity generation back into the local lines network.
