Prizes

1st Prize: Solar water heater

What's so great about a solar water heater?

The first prize in the Big Switch is a 302LK solar water heater kindly donated by synergex systems . This is a top quality unit big enough to meet the needs of the average sized New Zealand household.

Not only do you win the unit itself but we will also pay 50% of installation costs up to $2000!

Why is a solar water heater a good thing?

To combat climate change we need to phase out fossil fuels and move towards renewable energy sources like wind and solar. We also need to use energy more wisely - using less energy to get the same result, so we don't need to generate as much electricity.

In your own home, making the switch to the cleanest electricity company available in your area is a great start. There are also many energy saving measures you can take but one of the best things you can do is install a solar water heater.

Using the sun's energy to heat water for your household will save you money and reduce your electricity consumption. A solar water heater could save your household between $350 and $450 a year, at current electricity prices

According to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), if each household in New Zealand installed a solar water heater, carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation would be reduced by about 2 million tonnes per year.

Where can solar water heaters be used?

Solar water heaters can work all around New Zealand from Invercargill to the far north, although the amount of solar radiation varies according to location and time of year.

Standard solar water heating systems can produce around 75% of your household's water heating in summer and between 25 - 45% in winter, according to EECA.

2nd Prize: Mountain Bike

Kindly donated by Planet Cycles on Dominion Rd in Mt Eden the 2nd prize is a 'Giant Boulder' mountain bike.

The winner of this prize will be able to choose the size of the bike but a choice of colour may not be possible.

A bike is perfect for off-road fun and commuting to work. You can save on travel costs and on carbon emissions!

Cycling is healthy
Cycling is just plain good, low impact, cardio vascular exercise. LIe any form of exercise, regular cycling will keep you lean, fit, healthy, and happy.

Cycling is economical
Unlike a car, a good bike will outlast the owner, and few parts will ever break or fail. Some parts will wear out but replacing the tires is the greatest maintenance cost. While the average costs of maintaining a bicycle can be about $100 / year, the average cost of maintaining a car for a year can be more like $10,000.

Cycling is environmentally friendly
Each person that rides a bike rather than drives a car is helping to save our planet. Our civilisation has been burning huge quantities of coal, natural gas, oil, and their byproducts, thus pumping million of tons of carbon dioxide into the ecosystem. Living creatures absorb most of this carbon, but the excess accumulates in the atmosphere. The result has been climate change. So as well as switching to clean energy we can all make a difference by driving less and riding more.

The amount of carbon dioxide which motor vehicles produce is enormous. The world consumption of oil has now increased to about 3 billion tons of oil which means about 10 billion tons of CO2 are produced yearly from oil alone.
